This one always gets to me...

Pink Floyd
"Wish You Were Here"

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

This is late.. but I posted it for Kate (yay rhyming!).

i wasn't buck rogers
my cardboard
boxes
never became rocketships

i never pointed my finger to
fire a cuban missile
or smoked a pencil
in pretence
of a havana cigar

i never wanted to grow up to be
marylyn monroe to think
that gentleman prefer
blondes

i never had a space
race,
or felt the thawing remains
of a cold, unseen war

i never had to duck and cover
under my school desk, or
avoid the
red menace

yet i heard the tales of
camelot
whispers of ghosts

a forgotten age
only spoken
in hushed tones of reverence

i wondered
childlike
how dreams could die on
grassy knolls

how a nation
could be turned
from misguided innocence
to spiraling entropy
in just a single

shot
